For women, shaping up could save their lives. That's why Zachary police officers teamed up with martial arts masters from Gracie Barra to teach women self defense.

The group hosted their first class on Saturday at Zachary High School. They made it their goal to help these ladies get the skills they  need to get out of dangerous situations.

"I think it would be good for anybody to learn self defense because of the world we live in today," says Judi Boyle, who took the class. "I do a lot of shopping by myself and I go into Baton Rouge by  myself, and I try to be aware of my surroundings,  but I feel like I could learn some things that could help me."

It was the first class, but it won't be the last. Zachary PD will host another seminar on January 21, and again in February. For details, email chief David McDavid at dmcdavid@zacharypd.org.
