Zachary, La (NBC33) — The city of Zachary is getting fit, and city leaders are leading the way.
More than 50 city officials, police officers and firefighters signed up today to take part in the city's first fitness challenge.
The person with the greatest weight loss percentage will be awarded $1,000 dollars at the end of the three month challenge period.
Organizer Laura O'Brien says it's important for city leaders to set a good precedent for the rest of the community.
“I think (with) Louisiana being number five in the nation in obesity - it sort of sets a mark for our leadership to take a stand and combat that," states O’Brien.
Contestants weighed in Monday afternoon, and the competition is pitting teams against each other.
O'Brien says Mayor David Amrhein contacted her after watching the “Fit to Serve Day” held at the State Capitol in May.
