USS KIDD Veteran Memorial celebrated the 67th anniversary of the end of the World War II with a function at the old state capitol.

The event is part of the "Spirit of '45" program. World War II vets were treated to classic war era music and lunch.

Congressman Bill Cassidy, R-La., was on hand to honor vets. He says today's generations can learn from these veterans because they overcame economic recession and war to create a greater United States.

"If we can live in that shadow in that spirit, then we will one day maybe be honored by being compared to them," said Rep. Cassidy. "As we celebrate this heritage we are reminded of our potential."

"People make a lot of sacrifices on the home front and going to war as solders," said World War II veteran Ed Capron. "They should never forget that. It's the only reason they can have freedom today."

In 2010 Congress declared the second Sunday in August every year be remembered as National Spirit of '45 day.
