BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Three men are locked up in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison after they were caught in a stolen vehicle and attempted to outrun deputies. One man almost became a victim of this crime, but got away due to a quick reaction.
“He went around to the driver’s side door and tried to reach in,” Justen Cheney recalled. “I bashed on the gas and he took off running in the opposite direction.”
The whole thing started around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 3. Deputies with the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office were contacted regarding a possible stolen vehicle. When they went to investigate, the suspects tried to flee.
“From about a quarter mile away I saw a bunch of cop cars,” Cheney recalled.
Cheney believes he encountered one of the suspects and that man was trying to carjack him to avoid police capture.
“Out of no where this really large man was running towards the front of my car,” Cheney recalled. “The only option I had was to slow down or to hit him. My first instinct was to run him down because he was clearly running from the cops. But I decided against that, so I slowed down.”
Cheney, who had left his subdivision to grab a quick lunch, was lucky.
“As soon as he reached for the handle, I knew what he was doing,” he said.
Dwayne Anthony Jones, Quinn Harvey, and Devin Carter were all apprehended at various points during the chase. All three men have home addresses in the Thibodaux area. They were all arrested and charged with Illegal Possession of Stolen Things and Aggravated Flight from an Officer.
