HOLDEN, LA (NBC33) — THIS IS AN NBC33 NEWS UPDATE: An account has been opened at Capitol One Bank for Elizabeth Lynn Newman Ballard and Michelle Ballard.
ORIGINAL STORY: "That's all the family I had," says Charles Newman.
Charles Newman can't hold back the tears after his daughter Elizabeth, 30. and granddaughter Michelle, 7, died inside their mobile home after a fire engulfed it early Wednesday morning.
"Is there something you're going to miss most about your daughter?" "Everything, I don't know how I'm going to make it without her," says Newman.
Elizabeth died trying to escape out of the back window. Her daughter passed away while asleep in her bed.
One of the girls said she tried to get the other one up, but couldn't wake her up, so she jumped out of the door and burnt pretty good," says Newman.
Three of the other kids in the house and their father were barely able to escape with their lives. Investigators still don't know what caused the blaze. What Newman does remember is trying to save his loved ones and feeling totally helpless.
"It was red here, nothing but fire. The back had smoke on it, but I couldn't get in. I didn't know she was hanging out of the window," states Newman.
Newman says he can't bare to think when he wakes up tomorrosw his little girl won't be there.
"She brought me my paper to me. It was nice, like I said they were in my home till nine at night," says Newman.
It's his wife though who may take this loss the hardest.
"Every time she goes out the front door, she going to see this. The kids ain't here. That's all she had," says Newman
