BATON ROUGE,LA (NBC33) — Saturday afternoon, families came out for "Unity Day, Youth and Family Zone" in North Baton Rouge.
The goal of the event: get at risk kids to learn about summer activities that will enhance their social, emotional physical and academic skills.
Kids got a chance to watch a special karate presentation.
The event was hosted by John Daniel along with BREC, the Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office and several other partners.
Daniel said the event was not just for the kids but to help give parents support.
"Citizens engage in the community square we have a better society," said Daniel. "Today we had a broad range of people from different parts of the city engage in helping our youth become better citizens. "
The event columnated with a panel discussion featuring area law enforcement and community leaders. The main topics for that discussion: the importance of getting involved in activities and how to curb crime.
