NEW ROADS, La (NBC33) — Two murders over the past two weeks have left many in Pointe Coupee wondering what's happening.
The sheriff says Joshua Louis, 25, shot and killed Damona Brown, 36, outside of AJ's bar on Saturday, May 4. Louis was a wanted man until Monday morning, when he turned himself into the Pointe Coupee Sheriff's Office.
Police say Brandon Battley beat his grandmother to death two weeks ago.
These two tragic deaths only weeks apart is something that's hasn't been seen in the parish.
Pointe Coupee is an older, more rural community with far less crime than surrounding towns. But now, residents question what’s really going on around them.
"Before that, it's been real quiet out here. I’ve been here 45 years, never had any trouble. Nobody out here has ever had a lot of trouble," said New Roads resident, Aurther Laurent.
Laurent lives right down the road from AJ’s bar; it's where Demona Brown died after deputies said he was shot.
“They have had trouble there before. No killings. I don't remember any killings but there is a lot of shooting."
A shooting that Point Coupee Sheriff Bud Torres says stemmed from an argument between two people.
“If you’re aware of the way society is changing now, it’s a lot more violent people are more intolerant of each other than they were in the past," said Sheriff Torres.
That shooting happened only hours after the funeral of Bealuh Morris, a 91-year old woman that deputies said was killed by her own grandson.
That, in and of itself, startled some locals.
“I think so some of the older people are worried,” said Laurent. “I don't think kids today have respect for their leaders.”
Now, Sheriff Torres said his office is making sure everyone is parish is as safe as they can be.
"But I think if they look at the biggest picture that we are still a small l community we are still a rural community and the level of violence is not that bad here comparably,” noted Sheriff Torres.
Joshua Louis was booked into the Point Coupee Jail Saturday afternoon. He's been charged with Second-Degree Murder.
