Soldier rides bike 800 miles to raise cancer awareness

NBC NATIONAL NEWS — Family and friends cheered from the finish line as Army soldier Douglas McBroom, 24, completed his epic trek.
After receiving orders for a transfer to Corpus Christi from his home in Alabama, this Coastal Bend native decided to use his move to give a message.
After his mother was diagnosed last year in July, Douglas has been looking for a way to raise awareness for the incurable disease.
So, he started out from Mobile, Alabama on a mission to ride the entire way on his bicycle, followed closely behind by his best friend, driving a moving truck.
Not only did Douglas raise some eyebrows, he also raised some trouble with local police officers as has passed through town. A constable pulled Douglas over for holding up traffic, but after hearing what the young man was doing, he gave Douglas an official police escort through town.
800 miles later, Douglas pulled into Portland, Texas, and pushed hard for the finish line. A young man on a mission to save his mom and others like her by inspiring them to fight back.
