Happy birthday, America! You turned 237 today!

The Fourth of July is far more than just a time to eat hotdogs and pop fireworks; it’s a day when we celebrate independence.

Americans have celebrated this holiday since 1777, which is when the first-ever major celebration took place in Philadelphia. It included a parade and a 13-shot cannon salute. Of course, there were fireworks, too.

However, the holiday was not made official until 1870. That’s when Congress passed a bill to recognize the day as a national holiday.

We want to know how you celebrate! Go to the NBC33 Facebook page and tell us what you’re up to today. Also, send us a photo! You can email it to news@nbc33tv.com, or send it directly from your phone by downloading the NBC33 mobile app! Your pictures will be added to our photo gallery.
