Science projects of two middle school students get published in National Journal

BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Not many 12 or 13 year olds can say their science projects are nationally published. But two Baton Rouge middle school students now have that honor.
The two students thought they were only working on science fair projects, but the Soil Science Society of America used their results in their national journal, and they can't believe they now have resumes.
“People in Baton Rouge should know what's around there kids and it's important because science is all around us just like math is," says Kenilworth student, Desirae Gardner.
Desire Gardner's 6th grade science project started as a school assignment.
"My science fair project was about finding CCA, which is a tree treatment it protects the trees from rotting or having insects or bacteria and it's very harmful for kids," notes Gardner.
So did Jalen Scott, a 7th grader interested in graffiti art. For his project, he decided to test lead levels in paint.
"It affects the vegetation all the soil and if a child plays in the soil or has physical contact with the soil can harm them badly," says Scott.
And working with a professor from LSU and using state of the art technology, all of Jalen and Desireas hard work really paid off.
"It feels really good because not lot of kids can say I am in 7th grade middle school science fair project turned into a scientific journal," notes Scott. "It’s very exciting for me because not a lot of kids can say I was on the news and I got my article published," says Gardner.
The Soil Science Society of America used their research and findings in the national publication; Soil Horizons.
And huge accomplishments like Jalen and Desirae's can be used as inspiration for other students."This shows that a lot of kids from bad neighborhood or bad schools can really make in inspiration for someone else who can't," says Scott.
