BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Charles Davis has lived almost half of his life in the 70805 zip code. That’s the roughest part of Baton Rouge. The BRAVE program was supposed to change all that by having a special group of BRPD’s finest patrolling the area. And while he does feel their presence, he’s not so sure if what they're doing is doing any good at all.
"Lots of cops patrol through this area. I see them all the time," he said. "I don't feel secure. I'm afraid to get out of my car at night, really."
And the numbers back up his fear.
Despite a dip in homicides at the end of last year, this year it's a whole different story. Since 2013 began, there have been eight shootings in the zip code, four of them fatal. That’s why now, more than ever, he says neighbors are doing what they can to stay safe
"We watch out for each other. We do," states Davis.
For Davis, that means arming himself with a couple of guns just in case somebody tries to break into his house, again. But he says until more people in the area are working and off the streets, he doesn't think much is going to change in the 70805.
"I’m looking all around when I come in. all around when I go out," says Davis
