ST. GABRIEL, LA (NBC33) — "My daughter and I were watching T.V. when we heard. like two bangs," says Deborah Chabaud.
Deborah Chabaud just thought somebody had dropped something they were caryying. What she actually heard was the first shooting in Saint Gabriel in six years.
"It's very, very frightening to think two people came in, shot these people living here and you know," says Chabaud.
She moved to Saint Gabriel just two and a half months ago. She didn't want to live in the Capitol City because she thought it was just too violent. Now, she doesn't know what she needs to do to stay safe.
"My daughter is staying with me right now, but usually I'm by myself and I actually moved to Saint Gabriel because I thought It was a nice, safe community. To have this happen, I realize there's not too many safe communities anymore," states Chabaud.
So she's thinking about moving back to where she grew up, Saint James Parish. Until she does, she's going to make sure she's as safe as possible.
"New locks on the doors for sure, extra locks. And for sure I won't be going out at night by myself," says Chabaud.
So that she doesn't become the next victim.
"I feel sorry for both of them, for all of them. And I wonder how she's going to come back home. I would never move back into that apartment. I'd be too afraid," says Chabaud.
