Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — It was a crime that shocked Coy Avenue residents in Baton Rouge, and sheriff's deputies we spoke to described the beatings as heinous.
"It's a particularly heinous type of situation. We're definitely going to do everything we can to try to find out what happened to that child, and we're also working with child protective services to make sure that the other children in that home are safe and take out of custody," Casey Hicks with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s office, exclaimed.
Eight year-old Xzayvion Riley was found dead by sheriff's deputies Tuesday afternoon, his body covered with over 50 bruises, cuts and even bite marks. Detectives believe he was the apparent victim of cruel beatings, all allegedly occurring in front of the boy’s two siblings
"She (his sibling) even stated that he beat the child for several hours the day before he was pronounced dead," Hicks explained.
Neighbors living next door were hesitant to appear on camera, but said they were naturally shocked. All claimed if they had only known the boy was being abused, they would have immediately called police.
"It's a big shock you know because the family didn't look like that, I am just out looking in you know, but you could never tell that was going on," stated one neighbor.
But they say they're not just shocked by the child's death, They're also sad they will no longer see the boy they described as happy, well behaved and sweet, sitting on the steps of his coy avenue apartment complex.
"A sweet kid, you know. It's just sad."
The other children living in the home are now in the care of the Department of Child and Family services. Deputies believe that an autopsy set for Friday should shed more light on the exact cause of the child’s death, and more charges could be coming.
