A year after Hurricane Isaac made landfall, people in some of the hardest hit areas of Livingston parish are still recovering

"When we first walked in and we saw the damage. We really didn't think we were going to get it back to where we are now," explained Jodi Vicknair, one Maurepas resident who decided to re-build.

When we first spoke to Jodi Vicknair six months ago she and her family of five were still re-building their Maurepas home, after a year they're finally back inside their house.

"You know, look what we got now, and look what we didn't have a year ago. We had a house, it was nice, we were living in it, but we've got something now that we're really going to care about," said Vicknair.

While some people in Maurepas are finally back in their homes, others are still working to get things back to normal, a year after Isaac hit.

"Once I get stairs built to it, that's basically it. So I am hoping and shooting for next Wednesday or Thursday at the latest. I never thought it would ever get here myself because I’ve been going back and forth between motel rooms, friends, neighbors," explained Leo McDaniel, a Maurepas resident who is still not back in his home after it was destroyed.

It’s been a long road for both McDaniel and the Vicknair family, but they said there is no other option, Maurepas is home.

“Everybody has always pitched in and this is a great neighborhood. You couldn't beat the people back here. When hard times get rough, they all pull together," McDaniel explained.

"When Hurricane Isaac came around we were like, 'you know what, we're going to do it right now, because we have to. There’s no choice. if we want to get back in this house we've got to get in gear, and get doing it. We can't just sit back,” added Vicknair.

Several families did choose to sell or just tear down their homes completely, but those who stayed to re-build said they are happy they did.
