Dozens of families came out to Town Square in Downtown Baton Rouge Tuesday afternoon to celebrate the new year a little early. The event was part of the build up to the Red Stick Revelry. Parents say it was great way to enjoy the party and not keep their kids up late.

"I think it's wonderful, because usually I don't allow the children to stay up for midnight. So, they miss out," Trish Godley, who attended the event with her daughter, said. "Usually New Year's ends up being an adult activity, so they (kids) get to feel the whole thing of old year going out and the new year coming in."

"I was really looking for a way to bring the new year in with the kids where I felt safe and comfortable," Yolanda Johnson, who brought her kids to the event.

Johnson said she appreciated having activities she could do with the kids in Downtown Baton Rouge.

"The bonus is just the celebration of the revitalization of Downtown Baton Rouge," Johnson said. "So, I just thought this was perfect. "

The event was filled with activities for all ages. the crowd got to learn a new line dance. Kids listened to music performed by a bell choir. Kids also got a chance to do crafts and create their own red stick

Families watched as the Red Stick was put into place ahead of it's big drop at midnight during the Red Stick Revelry event.

East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Kip Holden said it was important to include the kids in the new year's fun.

Holden said, "We want everybody to feel apart of this and feel a piece of the place we call home, and therefore have a happy new year."

This was the first year for the event, and parents tell us they'd like to see it brought back next year.

"I love it. I just can't believe more people aren't out here, so hopefully it will grow bigger and better," Johnson said.
