A possible zoning change has galvanized one East Baton Rouge Parish community. Many residents along Hoo Shoo Too Road are upset about a proposed development in their back yard.

The people who live on Hoo Shoo Too Road say they've seen enough development on once open land. What seemed like the entire community is now standing up against a developer's latest plans.

Over a hundred people who live near Hoo Shoo Too Road showed to the Jones Creek Library on Thursday, Jan. 19 to stand together in protest - large enough numbers to impress their Metro Council member.

"This has got to be the single biggest showing of community involvement I've ever seen," Joel Boe’, East Baton Rouge Metro Council, said.

They stood together to oppose a developer's idea of changing the zoning for his 90-acre plot on Hoo Shoo Too, in order to build several residential lots.

"The road is long - one way in and one way out,” Mary Beth Matthews, a resident who lives on Hoo Shoo Too Road, explained. “[There are] lots of speeders. We don't need more subdivisions on Hoo Shoo Too."

"This is a community as well,” Trampus Wagoner, another resident who attended the meeting, added. “We want to make sure nothing detrimental happens to our area."

Those who've lived there decades say the area has already seen too much growth, and the infrastructure just can't take an influx of hundreds of new residents.

"Some parts have grown well, some not so well. Another subdivision? We just can't handle it."

And the fears were eased, when councilman Boe' pledged his support to block the zoning change.

"Stand up. Holler. Pound on the desk, and urge other council members to vote against it."

NBC33 News reached out to the developer, but he did not return our phone calls. He is scheduled to go in front of the planning and zoning commission, in March.
