BATON ROUGE, LA — Saturday at Walk-On’s Bistreaux and Bar former LSU star football player Patrick Peterson is hosting his foundations “Walking on Sunshine Family Fun Day. The proceeds will go to three local families whose children are fighting cancer.
I had a chance to catch up with the family of Originae Brown.
It’s news that no family every wants to hear.
“They did an MRI and they thought that it was Osteosarcoma, They sent her to St. Jude two days later only to confirm that she had Osteosarcoma, which is bone cancer,” Loretta Robillard said.
Robillard is the Aunt of 14 year old Orginae Brown, a then active cheerleader and volleyball player, who took the devastating news better than perhaps most would. At least better than her younger sister did.
"I was frustrated and mad. But she told me that I couldn’t cry if she wasn’t crying because I wasn't dealing with it," Orginiae’s younger sister Eunica said.
"When she heard the news she was ok. She is a person of great faith and she is very strong,” Robillard added.
Originae won’t make it to Baton Rouge until this weekend. Since May of this year she’s been receiving treatment at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. The host of this weekend’s big event, Patrick Peterson, won’t make it at all. He’ll be preparing for his NFL game on Sunday. His impact however will no doubt be felt.
"Being in the position that I am in, it was a no brainer. I want these kids to know that better days are ahead," Peterson said.
For Originae, those brighter days are very close. After having limb-sparing surgery in her right leg, she began 22 rounds of treatment. As of now, she’ll be back in Baton Rouge for good in January. That moment, as you can imagine, is highly anticipated by her family and friends.
"I just want to see her and help her with whatever it is that she needs help with,” Eunicia said.
The doctors say she may never be able to go back to the cheering and volleyball that she loves. That’s not what Originae is going to go by.
"She doesn’t care, she will do anything she can to get back on track,” said her younger sister with a smile.
