Deputy Jason Triche returned home Monday after spending more than three months in the hospital.

He was one of four St. John the Baptist sheriff's deputies shot in August in what investigators have described as an ambush. Two officers died, while Triche was one of two who were wounded.

His doctors told him Monday morning they would release him from the hospital, so family and friends were only able to create a small welcome home party. But those in attendance were full of excitement.

"Oh, it's wonderful," said Mary Champagne, Triche's mother-in-law. "I mean, it's been like on pins and needles waiting for him to come home, hoping that he recovers. You know, day by day."

His family said it was very pleased with all the support it got from the St. John the Baptist Sheriff's Office, which included bringing food to the hospital for his family. Some other sheriff's offices around Southeastern Louisiana also pitched in.

"I know they brought him a wheelchair," Champagne said, "they bought him a walker, and they brought him some different things home to kinda help make it easier for him."

With a police escort, Triche rode into town with a smile on his face, accompanied by his wife and son.

"(He) looks great," said his aunt, Anna Ferarra. "Compared to what he's been through. What he been through; hell and back."

Triche even had to overcome the loss of his father while he was in the hospital. While he declined to speak with reporters, Triche said he feels good. His family is focused on the future.

"We're just glad to have him come back home. We're so happy," Champagne said. "You just don't know how bad and how long it's been. It's a long road he's gotta go through, but we're going to do everything we can to take care of him."

Champagne added that his family thinks he will return to the Sheriff's Office when he's ready.

"I think because he loves his job," she said. "He really does, he loves his job."
