The La. 77 bridge over the Intracoastal Canal, also known as the Grosse Tete Bridge, is back in service ahead of schedule. Commuters say it's a big help for drivers in the area.

"I'm glad it's done. Thank ya'll very much," David Guidry, who lives in Grosse Tete, said.

Guidry uses the bridge to get to work, and says when he heard the news he was happy.

"I hit my knees on the ground and said 'Thank you Lord' that was a gift," Guidry said.

A barge hit the bridge in late February causing major damage to the bridge. Drivers who depend on La. 77 to cross the Intracoastal had to go out of their way to get to the Plaquemine area from Gross Tete. Drivers say it was a major headache.

"Bad very bad. It was nothing nice not good," Guidry stated.

The bridge reopened to traffic Saturday about 45 days ahead of schedule according to DOTD officials.
Drivers like guidry are grateful.

"I've been driving down this road for 4 years," Guidry said."... This is a blessing to all of us right here thank ya'll. "

Now Guidry said he can go back to his normal routine and get where he needs to go with out a lot of hassle.

"Compared to Interstate 10 this way here is shorter, it's easier, and it's safer," Guidry said.
