BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The case load continues to grow for the Internal Affairs Division as yet another Baton Rouge police officer is arrested for illegal activity in office. The latest internal arrest in the department has some in the public worried.
"It's disturbing, it's always disturbing when you hear police committing crimes," Kennedy Greenrod, a recent transplant to Baton Rouge, said.
"You know you look up to the law, and you expect them to take care of you, and when they're out there breaking the law what kind of message does that send to the general public," Tom Tesnow, a Baton Rouge Resident, said.
But the feelings of disappointment don't stop with the public.
"I was certainly let down. I was let down by the officer,” Police Chief Dewayne White said, “The over 600 officers that work tirelessly everyday, that do what's right, that exhibit principles that lead to character. He's let them down."
Many have said they're still willing to give the department the benefit of the doubt, but they expect officers to be held to the highest standards.
"These are the people we trust, they uphold our laws, and we expect them to abide by the same laws," Suzanne McGrew, another resident of Baton Rouge, said.
Chief White says this week’s events, while unfortunate, don't reflect the standards of the police department.
"This agency shouldn't be judged by the actions of one officer. We're not going to sweep things under the rug, we're going to take the appropriate action. If that means arresting and terminating an officer for those offenses than so be it," Chief White said.
Both officers arrested Thursday are on administrative leave, pending formal trials.
