Almost 40 people officially became U.S. citizens today, and it happened right here in Baton Rouge.

The naturalization ceremony for the 37 people from more than 20 countries happened this morning at the Federal Courthouse. One person told us simply, it was the best day of her life.

"I've been waiting for that day for 34 years,” Amena Ziadah said. “I'm so happy to be an American citizen. I'm just waiting for that day. I never cried in my life until I saw my first son born, and now I'm crying now because it's one of the happiest days of my life to be an American citizen."

More than 25,000 people become U.S. citizens every year.
