BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Baton Rouge law enforcement displayed its commitment to helping innocent victims of crimes.

Sheriff Sid Gautreaux hosted the 7th annual "Evening of Remembrance" Tuesday night at Chapel on the Campus.

He was joined by Baton Rouge Police Chief Dewayne White, District Attorney Hillar Moore, and other local leaders.

The sheriff's office has a victims' services division, which helps cover lost wages, medical bills, and funeral costs. In the last year, it has given out more than $325,000 to victims' families.

"They're so appreciative," said the head of that division, Sgt. Carolyn Stapleton. "I mean, I cannot tell you. The personal thank you's, the thank you letters. It is the most rewarding job in the world."

The Sheriff also took the opportunity to introduce Baton Rouge Area Victims Empowered, a new organization that will raise money, in addition to the federal fund, for families of murder victims.
