BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The United States army turned 237 Thursday and in celebration here in Baton Rouge 40 young men and women honored the big day by pledging themselves to the army. The Baton Rouge Recruiting Battalion administered the oath of enlistment to over 40 new recruits from across the area, many of whom will be heading to basic training in the next few weeks. All have said they are both excited and happy about their choice to continue army tradition.
“It's an unselfish act. We're serving everyone in the United States, and I feel honored to have accepted that privilege and I look forward to doing my duty," Shalawnda Wickware, a new recruit, explained.
The theme of this year's celebration is army past, present and future, with the latest crop of recruits accounting for the future of the army.
