St. Amant, La — Shortly after 11:00 am on August 18, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred on LA Hwy 431 north of LA Hwy 934 (Black Bayou Rd.) in Ascension Parish.
The crash took the life of 67-year-old Karen A. Russell of St. Amant.
The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred when Russell crossed LA Hwy 431 in front of her residence to check her mailbox.
After she retrieved her mail, she attempted to cross westbound back across LA Hwy 431 to return to her residence.
At the same time, 50 year old Paul J. James (also of St. Amant) was driving a 2011 Ford F-250 southbound on LA Hwy 431.
James was unable to avoid Russell as she was crossing the roadway and struck her with his vehicle.
Russell sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Impairment on the part of James is not suspected, and he was not cited in the crash.
James was properly restrained and was uninjured in the crash.
Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines.
Pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and should always avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas.
Pedestrians must also assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night.
Crossing roadways only in well-lit, designated areas and always walking facing traffic will enhance the safety for pedestrians.
