Weekend crash claims the lives of 5 people in St. Landry Parish
Eunice, LA (KADN) — A horrific crash over the weekend claimed five lives from Acadiana. The crash happened Friday afternoon on LA Highway 13 south of Eunice.
Twenty-two year old Jacob Courville was driving a Honda Civic north on LA Highway 13 when, for reasons still under investigation, he traveled into the the other lane, hitting a Cheverolet Tahoe, driven by forty-eight year old Chaman Richardson, head on.
Courville had three passengers in his car that were not wearing seat belts, and as a result died in the crash. Twenty-nine year old Jamie Prejean was in the Cheverolet also not wearing a seat belt, and died as well.
"One of the biggest things, not wearing seat belts. When you look at just the fatal crashes that we've seen here in the Troop I area this year, over seventy-percent of people who have died in crashes were not wearing their seat belts. That's alarming, that's something that's very alarming to us," says Trooper Stephen Hammons, State Police Troop I.
Courville was the only person wearing a seat belt that died in the crash. State Police Troop I investigated ten fatal crashes just in the month of May resulting in fifteen fatalities. Richardson was the only survivor in this crash, and he too was wearing a seat belt.
