There was a dramatic rescue this afternoon. A man fell into a water tower in downtown Baton Rouge. It took about an hour but the man was rescued. The tower was empty at the time. The man was doing construction work inside the tower when he fell.
The fire department says he fell about 35 feet onto a bed of sand. The man was sandblasting and repainting the inside of the water tank when it happened. About an hour later, fire fighters were able to get the man out on a stretcher. Paramedics took him to a hospital with what appears to be lower back injuries.
Robert Combs with BRFD says, “He is verbally communicating with everyone. He is able to move his hands and feet and everything so we don’t suspect any major injuries at this point.”
Dale Abreo, owner of Structural Protection Services, says the company will suspend their contract work until a full investigation is complete. As for the water tank, the Baton Rouge Water Company says this incident will not affect any neighborhoods.
