USS KIDD keeps Spirit of ‘45 alive in BR
BATON ROUGE (NBC33) — The USS KIDD Veterans Memorial & Museum Executive Director Alejandra Juan will represent the KIDD and the City of Baton Rouge at the Spirit of '45 National Leaders Conference being held in San Diego, Feb. 14-16.
Attendance to this invitation-only conference was limited to 100 organizations across the United States including representatives of leading WWII museums, historical societies and heritage associations.
"For more than 30 years, the USS KIDD has been the heart of Baton Rouge's enduring salute to Louisiana veterans and is proud to be the first destroyer in America to join the National Spirit of '45 movement,” said City of Baton Rouge Mayor-President Melvin 'Kip' Holden.
In 2010, Congress unanimously voted in favor of a national “Spirit of '45 Day” observed on the second Sunday in August to preserve and honor the legacy of the men and women of the World War II generation.
“We want to help renew America’s spirit and teach younger generations about the timeless qualities of the ‘Greatest Generation,’” said USS KIDD Executive Director Alejandra Juan. “Their determination, patriotism and resiliency is admirable, and those are the types of qualities that we want our visitors to remember when we host these celebrations.”
“Next year, communities across our nation will hold special events marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II,” said Holden.
In August, Spirit of '45 Celebration attendees are welcome to join the KIDD for a ceremony and USO style musical performance by Rosie and the Swingin’ Riveters.
