Tempe, AZ (KPHO) -- Tuesday marks a somber, 10-year anniversary of Pat Tillman's death in a friendly fire incident in Afghanistan.

Tillman gave up a high-profile NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals to join the U.S. Army after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the U.S.

The Army initially said Tillman was killed by enemy fire, but later admitted three fellow Army Rangers thought they were firing on the enemy.

Last weekend, one of those former Rangers, Steven Elliott, told ESPN's Outside the Lines that he thinks it was his bullets that killed Tillman.

Elliott said he was about 100 yards away when he and two other soldiers opened fire.

Saturday is the 10th annual Pat's Run in Tempe.

The 4.2-mile run and walk raises money for the Tillman Military Scholars.

The run winds through the streets of Tempe, finishing at the 42-yard line of Frank Kush Field in Sun Devil Stadium, symbolic of the No. 42 jersey Tillman wore as an ASU Sun Devil.
