RAYNE, La (NBC33) - The small town of Rayne was slammed by a big tornado on March 5, and the town now looks to prepare itself for another onslaught of bad weather.
Early Saturday morning, the security camera at Meche’s Pharmacy caught video of employees narrowly escaping the path of an EF2 tornado, which can produce winds up to 135 miles per hour.
"It leaves you with a helpless feeling,” stated Wayne Wyatt, an employee of Meche’s Pharmacy. "The rain was so intense, you couldn't see more than about three feet in front of you."
The tornado was an estimated 300 yards across, leaving a five-mile path of destruction through one of the poorest parts of Rayne, damaging more than 100 homes."
"The tin started rattling on the house. I had never heard the tin rattle like that, so right quick i knew it was a tornado, the way it was hitting down so hard," stated Michael Carter, whose home was destroyed in the tornado.
Michael and his wife Mona were still in bed. Their two young children were on the couch in the next room.
Then the storm hit. The children were still on the couch, trapped under a tree; they were not injured. Mona was also pinned, but she was unconscious.
Michael stated that God gave him the strength to pull his wife from the wreckage. She is recovering from a head injury, but isn’t in the hospital anymore.
