BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A bill that makes texting while driving
a primary offense now heads to Gov. Bobby Jindal's desk after
passing both the Senate and House chambers.

The measure, sponsored by Sen. Butch Gautreaux of Morgan City,
would tweak existing law passed in 2008 that made texting while
driving a secondary offense. The change means police can stop
anyone they see texting at the wheel.

Minors 17 and under could be stopped simply for using a cell
phone.

The measure (Senate Bill 9) passed the House in a 69-22 vote
Wednesday.
