There are a lot of new ways to watch what used to simply be known as "television".

"You want to put something from the internet on your TV screen, you can do it. You want to take something that's normally on your TV screen and watch it on a tablet or phone, you can do it," says Wall Street Journal personal technology columnist Walter Mossberg.

Mossberg has been reviewing technology since before there were millennials, and he sees a day where we all can control what we watch and where we watch it.

"We are moving to an era where things are more a la carte and more internet and more unconcerned about what device you are watching them on," Mossberg explains.

There are the "beamers", devices that allow you to send content from your devices to your big screen.

Google's Chromecast, Apple TV and Roku also provide access to content providers like Netflix, formerly an online video rental service now moving into the world of content creation.

"Netflix has 14 Emmy nominations," Mossberg points out. "If you ever would have told me that three years ago I would have laughed at you, but they have 14 Emmy nominations."

There are also options like Tivo, which adds the functionality of a cable box and the ability to record programing.

Still, each piece of hardware brings its own advantages and disadvantages and none are the complete solution...yet.
