NBC NATIONAL NEWS — Imagine replacing internet banner ads with something you'd rather see there, like your Facebook photos or popular apps.
That's what a San Diego company is doing.
"We replace 80 percent of the banner ads on the internet right now," says OverApps' Michael Herndon.
The ads are replaced with with nearly 100 apps that OverApps offers as an alternative.
"you can replace them with Facebook, Twitter, Pandacam," Herndon says. "You can replace them with pictures of sunsets, you can replace them with pictures of cats. It all depends on your individual preferences."
Herndon is basically declaring war on the banner ads that we all get when we surf the net, and he wants to replace them with something of your choice.
OverApps is a browser add-on that lets the internet page load on your computer first then replaces the ads from your selections.
"Each user gets to pick which ads are replaced, and they get to pick it for the individual ad unit, they get to pick it for all ad units that size on that domain, or they get to pick it for all ad units that size internet wide," Herndon explains.
In other words, you can pick one particular ad to replace or pick ads of that size across the internet.
The question now: Will people who complain about the ads actually do something about it?
Herndon hopes so.
