An apology letter went home to some Galveston County, Texas parents Monday after a motivational speech at a middle school turned into an explicit sex talk.
School board trustee Shirley Price spoke to the girls at Crosby Middle School a couple of weeks ago.
She was asked to inspire girls in sixth, seventh and eighth-grades to do well on an upcoming test, but instead the speech turned into a controversy.
The school district said Price asked the principal to leave the assembly and then included in her speech "off-target and objectionable" references to sex.
Price told NBC affiliate KPRC that she did not want to explain her comments in detail, but said she was misinterpreted.
"I think it has been, yes," she said.
Price said she would only elaborate about her comments publicly after she gets a chance to apologize to the girls.
"I have asked permission to talk with the kids and apologize to them as I have to their parents," she said.
Price was picked to speak to the students because, in spite of physical challenges, she earned a doctorate degree and a position with the Hitchcock ISD school board.
Hitchcock Independent School District officials said they sent home letters of apology to parents. In it, the administration said "principals have now been instructed to attend all speeches given by guest speakers to ensure a situation like this does not happen again."
"As a district, we stand ready to support our students in every way we can, including counseling as needed," said Randy Dowdy with Hitchcock ISD.
The next Hitchcock ISD school board meeting will be held on Feb. 16. The board will discuss the controversy then.
