The Southern University community is mourning the loss of a beloved professor and educator.

Dr. Jewel L. Prestage died Friday in Houston. She was the first African-American woman to earn a Ph.D in Political Science in the U.S. Prestage served 18 years as the Chair of Southern's Political Science Department, and retired from the university as the Dean of the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs.

School officials said she made a huge difference in their community, and he will be missed, but never forgotten. She was 82.
