State Police arrest woman for ID theft, say more victims possible
BATON ROUGE (NBC33) — A woman has been arrested for unauthorized credit card use and stealing mail, but police say the fraud my not be over yet.
30-year-old Chanel Gray of Jackson, LA was arrested by the Louisiana State Police and West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office for Unauthorized use of an “Access Card” (as theft) and several counts of mail theft.
According to the Louisiana State Police, detectives found numerous pieces of mail that were addressed to people living in West Feliciana Parish. Detectives believe Gray stole mail from mailboxes throughout West Feliciana Parish, and used the stolen information to open fraudulent credit card accounts.
The two agencies were informed in 2013, when a former West Feliciana resident, said that her credit card information and former address had been used to make many fraudulent purchases in East Baton Rouge and East Feliciana Parishes.
Police said the victim was not even living in the state when the fraudulent transactions occurred. The victim told Police she suspected someone had stolen important mail that had been sent to her previous address.
Investigators believe there may be more victims who are not aware that their credit has been compromised. The Louisiana State Police and the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to check their credit and report any suspicious activity to them.
Police also believe that Gray was not acting alone and are asking anyone with additional information to please contact the W. Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office (225-784-3136), Louisiana State Police Detectives (225-925-7282), or their local law enforcement agency.
Detectives say they “will follow all leads in an effort to identify possible victims of identity theft and to bring this case to a close.”
