SAINT HELENA, La (NBC33) -- The St.Helena school system is in danger of being taken over by the state. That's according to state superintendent Paul Pastorek.
He says the Louisiana Department of Education would prefer not to forcibly run the schools. Instead, he wants St. Helena to voluntarily turn the system over to the state. Education leaders cite several reasons for wanting to take over. St. Helena faces problems with their finances, their facilities, and their academics.
Several months back, the state's Fire Marshal claimed both the high school and the elementary school were in deplorable conditions. The high school has been without a fire alarm system since 2008. Both of the schools are also in danger of making it onto the Academically Unacceptable Schools list. The state has already taken over the middle school.
