A 7-year-old girl kidnapped in Sacramento, California managed to escape from her abductor's trunk, police said Monday.

The girl was walking with her mother and another sibling Saturday when a man pulled up alongside the trio in a vehicle and grabbed the child.

The man put the girl in the trunk of his four-door sedan, but she was able to escape by jumping out as the man drove away, according to police.

A nearby resident called 911 after hearing the girl's mother react to what had just happened.

"I heard the woman screaming," witness Eric Erickson said. "I mean she was -- it was a blood-curdling scream, at the top of her lungs."

Erickson jumped out of his living room as soon as he heard the yelling coming from across the street.

The kidnapper sped down 47th Avenue with the girl in the trunk, but only got about one-fifth of a mile before the girl made her miraculous escape.

"And she ran right to my husband and she says, 'he stole me, he stole me,'" witness Christina Covey said. "She told me she was hitting the trunk. Because he put her in, grabbed her, threw her in the trunk -- but he didn't close it all the way, because her leg was there. And he was nervous, so he just didn't close it. And he sped down here, so she opened the trunk."

Covey delivered the little girl back into her mother's arms.
