NBC NATIONAL NEWS — Expanding background checks for gun buyers is off the table. The Senate rejected the proposal today, and gun control supporters see it as a major blow to any future legislation.
The focus was on the proposal to expand background checks, which was pushed by West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin, and Pennsylvania Republican Pat Toomey, and backed by President Obama and most Democrats.
The measure lost by 6 votes.
Backers of the Manchin-Toomey plan pleaded on the Senate floor.
88 percent of Americans in the new Quinnipiac Poll support background checks.
Other proposals to reduce gun violence are still pending, but the background check was the only major one that looked possible to pass.
