Section of Gulfport Beach closed due to sewage problem
Jackson, MS — Section of Gulfport Beach closed due to sewage problem
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), through its Beach Monitoring Program, issued a beach closure Tuesday for a section of beach in Gulfport:
Station 10 – Gulfport Central Beach -- from Alfonso Drive east to Arkansas Avenue.
This segment of beach has been under an advisory but was changed to a closure today due to a sewage bypass. Construction activity by the city resulted in a bypass that has been contained and is now being rerouted.
MDEQ advises residents not to enter the water or consume any seafood collected from these near-shore waters until further notice.
MDEQ will monitor the water and lift the closure when bacteria levels indicate conditions are safe for water contact.
