A double murder in the Gardere area has some there asking if enough is being done to fight crime. The murder comes weeks after a new sheriff substation opened to help increase security presence.

"Ignorant people. Killing each other for no reason. Now a days people don't fight, people just shoot. So that's why I don't feel safe, I don't let my kids outside, I don't sit outside, I don't communicate with people for that same reason," says Gardere resident, Nanna Gayden.

That is the reaction in the Gardere neighborhood after two more of its own were lost to gunplay. And this is after East Baton Rouge deputies intensified anti-violence efforts in the area.

"They've been pretty active. I see them all the time. Even sometimes when you don't want to see them, but they've been pretty active in the neighborhood," says resident, Char Johnson.

Johnson, who's been living in the neighborhood just under a year, doesn't see this recent murder as a law enforcement issue. She says it's an issue of people thinking they are above the law.

"They've been doing what they are supposed to be doing. And it's not their fault. It's people who feel like it's okay to take a life. And whoever feels like that does not need to be here," says Johnson.

Those kind of people are the ones who hold the neighborhood back and it has lowered the expectations of the community as a whole.

"I just went to my sons graduation last night. It was 269 kids who graduated. And it was a really emotional issue because they weren't expecting that many to graduate," says Johnson.

However, Gayden, who has lived in this neighborhood for 8 years, believes OFFICERS can do a better job getting criminals out of her neighborhood.

"More surveillance 24 hours, more patrolling, all day everyday. Because when you actually need them, they not nowhere around. So yeah, we really need more patrols," Gayden said.

Deputies are still looking for the killer of Orok Ironbar and Russell Celestine. if you have any information please contact crime stoppers at 344-stop.
