It’s been nearly 20 years since a top fuel car has raced in the Baton Rouge area. That drought will end in March with the International Hot Rod Association’s Mardi Gras Nationals at State Capitol Raceway.
The event includes a full schedule of drag racing -- including professional and sportsmen categories. The feature event involves those top fuel dragsters, topping out at 8 thousand horsepower and 320 miles per hour.
Stock car racing's biggest event comes this weekend at Daytona. IHRA organizers are quick to point out a big difference from that experience. At the Mardi Gras Nationals, you'll have total access to every driver. That's something you won't find at a NASCAR track unless you're a VIP.
This event kicks off the IHRA season and will set the tone for the rest of 2009.
The Mardi Gras Nationals run from Friday, March 6th through Sunday, March 8th at the State Capitol Raceway off Highway 190 West in Port Allen.
