Pool safety: Keeping your kids safe this Memorial Day weekend
BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Many families will probably hit the pools this Memorial Day weekend to stay cool, but officials say be careful.
More than 200 kids drown in swimming pool accidents every year. Local Red Cross officials say parents should take extra precautions right now to help prevent this, like blocking off your pool with a fence, and most importantly, don't leave your kids alone.
"Really with children, with anybody, you need to have an adult. Somebody who's supervising what's going on," said Nancy Malone of American Red Cross. "Anybody can get in trouble, whether they've had a little bit to drink, whether their horsing around and just get caught off guard, there are a lot of ways to have an emergency in the pool, so having somebody outside the pool watching is absolutely key."
Malone also suggested to take swimming classes because it's important to know how to swim. She said it could save your life and the lives of your loved ones.
