A stand-off is underway in Washington State after four police officers are gunned down and killed at a coffee shop as they were getting ready to start their shift Sunday morning.

Police have surrounded a home in Seattle, where they believe the suspected gunman, Maurice Clemmons, is hold up.

Near the scene of the shooting those who knew the deceased and many more who didn't came out to honor the officers.

Shortly after 8:15 am Sunday morning the call for help went out from the Parkland Cafe Forza.

Four uniformed Lakewood police officers having coffee before their shift were shot and killed.

The officers were: Mark Reninnger, Ronald Owens, Tina Griswold, and Greg Richards.

"We have no sense of motive. We know two of the officers were executed while writing their reports one stood up and tried to stop him and they got shot the fourth stood up and struggled with the man outside of the cafe and got a shot off and hopefully the suspect's hit," said Detective Ed Troyer with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

The gunman who may have been shot was last seen running away from the cafe north towards Highway 512.

After following up tips and leads all day police released the name of a person of interest wanted for questioning 37-year-old Maurice Clemons a Pierce County man who was arrested earlier this year for assaulting a police officer.

Investigators said trying to work and grieve at the same time isn't easy.

"Can you even explain what this is like for your folks for you Heidi? No we have lost four officers today. They were out here for us we should be out there for them it's just not right," said Lakewood Police Lt. Heidi Hoffman.

At the end of this terrible day, the people the officers used to protect came out to show their support.

There were at least two other customers and two employees in the shop but they were not injured. One of the employees said the gunman approached the counter as if he was going to buy a cup of coffee but then pulled the gun out from beneath his coat and started shooting at the officers.
