This is an NBC33 News Update: The pedestrian killed on 11/2/10 in the 7100 block of Airline Highway was misidentified and is NOT Terry Royce. Terry Royce is alive and well. The pedestrian, identified through fingerprints today, is actually a 50-year old homeless male whose family has not yet been located.

The pedestrian was originally identified at the scene by EMS personnel as Mr. Royce. Using the name and date of birth provided by EMS, investigating officers obtained a photograph and physical description of Mr. Royce, both of which appeared to be similar to the deceased person.

That night officers attempted to contact Royce’s family but were unsuccessful. The next day officers did talk to Royce’s sister and informed her of Royce’s apparent death. She advised officers at the time that Royce was believed to be staying in a trailer somewhere near Airline and Prescott, very near the site of the crash.

At some point the sister also apparently viewed Royce’s body at a local funeral home and did not subsequently express any reservations or concerns to the investigators regarding the identity of the body.

This morning, however, six days after the crash, Royce’s sister contacted police to say that her brother Terry had called her from a local hospital to tell her that he was still alive.

Traffic Homicide Unit Investigators today used fingerprints of the pedestrian to positively identify him and are attempting to locate and notify the man’s family.
