In May 2000, a 133-car train, operated by Union Pacific Railroad, derailed on a bridge near Bayou Des Cannes.

Fifteen cars derailed, containing hazardous chemicals, and three cars exploded.

Residents feared the surrounding area would be polluted, including the Eunice City Lake.

The area has been cleaned and the remaining balance of cash set aside for cleaning efforts was awarded to The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries by Louisiana Western District Court for improving the lake.

The work has started and when complete will be a complete outdoor recreational and wildlife habitat for fishing and boating.
