BATON ROUGE, La. (NBC33) — Ouachita - The warm weather has Louisiana strawberries popping up early. In Monroe one farmer says it's the earliest he's ever seen. Mild winter weather is causing ripe red strawberries weeks early at Sal Petito's Farm. Typically harvesting and selling strawberries begin around April 10th, this year Petito could be picking in March. Warm temperatures may have business blooming early, but it is risky as blooms and berries could get damaged during a late freeze.
Ascension - In Donaldsonville the city council has approved a plan to re-draw district lines. That means later this month they'll have to vote on the matter. The council has been analyzing census data and they're working with a Gonzales consulting firm. Looks like four of their five council districts will be changed just a bit. This is required so the city can meet minority voting benchmarks, and also have similar sized voting populations in each district.
Bossier - Margaritaville Resort Casino broke ground Wednesday, Jimmy Buffett showed up dressed in jeans, jacket, and yellow hard hat and grabbed a shovel to break ground on the more than $2 million property, projected to open in June 2013 that will carry his name and the name of one of his most popular hit songs. Once complete, the 197 million dollar casino and hotel will include a 450-seat restaurant, a pool with swim up bar, and a large entertainment venue.
