Mardi Gras break's behind us. So kids and parents have to gear up for standardized test season, but for a lot of students, this is a tough time.

Around half of children face anxiety because of the math on the LEAP tests.

All of the numbers, equations, and fractions, some people just don't get math.

That's why Ryan Booth decided to leave his job as a teacher and help work with kids one-on-one.

"Even adults are scared of math. That's a common joke," Booth said. "We teach them a lot of math. They feel a lot better about math more."

That's what he does here. It's called a Mathnasium. With LEAP testing coming up in just a couple of weeks, it can be a rough time for students like Larkin Price.

"I am a little nervous," Larkin admitted.

Larkin's in the fifth grade and taking tests like the LEAP doesn't come easy to her.

"In third grade I skipped a question accidentally on a math LEAP, and I had one question left over," Larkin said.

That's why she's here because she doesn't want that to happen again.

"They start saying math's my favorite subject," Booth said.

"I love it. It's really fun!," Larkin exclaimed.

The center relies on the 3 C's, comprehension, concept and computation.

"We also see a lot of kids too who don't know how to apply those skills and who aren't comfortable working word problems," Booth said. "A lot people are uncomfortable with real life problems, and of course, the LEAP test includes a lot of them."

Booth has some advice for parents preparing their kids for LEAP.

"I tell them to get a LEAP practice test and go through some of that with your child," Booth said.

Larkin has some advice for the students.

"I would say focus, concentrate, and do your best," Larkin said. "Don't just answer a question because this depends on whether you pass or not."
