BATON ROUGE, La (NBC33) - Folks in the Old Jefferson subdivision may lose their neighborhood park as they know it.

Residents met with BREC last night to discuss renovations to the park that's been part of their community for over thirty years.

BREC wants to take out most of the play ground equipment and swimming pool.
they say they would replace them with a gazebo and walking paths. Kids have played on that playground for at least fifteen years, not to mention how many learned how to swim in the pool.

They also want to do away with the old tennis courts. BREC says they can be better served as half basketball courts. They aren't doing away with the main exercise facility, but they haven't fixed it up either.

Nathan teaford is the president of the neighborhood association in Old Jefferson.
He says they're not getting a fair deal.

I've been a homeowner in Old Jeff since '89. Haven't had an association here for years. In September less than 1% of residents started this one. And the men in the video claim to speak for Old Jeff? They put more effort into whining about this pool instead of starting a neighborhood watch like they said they would! Keep your eyes and ears open Old Jeff! They are laying the foundation to impose a crime prevention/improvement district mandatory property tax on us. If you don't want to throw away $

If you don't want to throw away $30 voluntarily...try a mandatory $100 or 200! We will all have to vote to prevent this tax!

I got cut off at the end!

Us long-time residents KNOW that originally this property was a private club that went defunct. BREC took what could have been an eyesore and renovated it to a park. Small BREC neighborhood parks like this do NOT have pools...only the larger BREC community parks like Forrest Park do. Which BTW...is just a tad over 5 miles from us...not "over 10 miles" as stated in the news piece!

You said it all Dixie, these two individuals and a hand full of thier miguided followers have falsely represented the homeowners in this subdivison once again. Go Figure

I have lived in Old Jeff. subdivision for more than 30 (thirty) years. Over that period of time, there have been NO significant improvements made to this neighborhood park by BREC. 20, 30 years ago, that pool was operational and in pretty good shape. Today, that same pool is NOT being used due to the fact that time has taken its toll on the facility and BREC has failed to keep up with the required maintenance.

This has nothing to do with the park but the neighborhood. I have lived here since the begining and I have never seen any one plant a garden in their front yard. Everytime i walk out my door there it is. Bean sprouts growing. This looks , shall i say trashey.
If anyone should be trying to sell they can forget. A concerned member, is there anything we can do??????????

Good point by the prior poster! How can anyone take seriously these 2 guys after sending out flyers against BREC titled "The Great Scam."

And how about the statement..."They're taking stuff away while adding stuff." Classic...

VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE T.N.A ASSOCIATION I THOUGHT THEY HAD MORE CLASS THAN THAT! GET ALL YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT BE FOR YOU GO ON T.V. AND SPEAK FOR ME! I CAN SPEAK FOR MY SELF! I AM NOT AN UNHAPPY RESIDENT AND THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A MEETING HELD BY THE T.N.A STATING THERE CONCERNS AND MADE THE WHOLE SUBDIVISON AWARE BE FOR SPEAKING FOR EVERYONE THAT LIVES HERE! MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL THE FACTS AND INFO CORRECT BEFORE GOING PUBLIC! THE LETTER WAS NOT SENT TO EVERYONE IN THE SUBDIVISON.

I was at the meetings that took place in Old Jefferson Subd. both times that BREC came out and presented us with some great plans. The Civic Association sent a flyer out describing how BREC has "scammed us" before BREC even had a chance to give us the latest plans which I and many others think were great. I want to Thank BREC for working with us and the good job they have done. We may not get everything we all want , but we should be good and honest people to sit down with BREC and work it out.

Hmmmm seems WVLA is not posting comments made by other Old Jefferson residents. Comments submitted over the weekend are still not approved as of 10:am Monday morning.

2nd time Nicholas Madere has been out here and failed to report all sides of the story. Apparently, WVLA backs this type of reporting.

A good local news channel will verify all sides of a story. Both the BREC renovations and Magnolia Cemetery is public info a simple search would have explained. Again, the 2 men in your "report" do NOT represent the opinions of the majority of residents in Old Jefferson. Thank you BREC and the Foundation for Historical Louisian's Magnolia Cemetery Auxiliary Board!

The Cemetery (the man referred to), is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Civil War Discovery Trail. It is being restored thanks to the efforts of the Foundation for Historical LA through its Magnolia Cemetery Auxiliary Board. The renovations & maintenance through BREC are paid for w/ donations collected by the Auxiliary. Going on local TV to demean the restoration efforts of this Foundation with the intent to save a pool used by VERY FEW...is a travesty!

These 2 men falsely stated they represent Old Jefferson. Of the 960 homeowners, just over 30 organized and made these 2 officers of a prior non-active assoc. These 2 men DO NOT represent the majority of OJ residents. We are VERY happy with the Master Plan BREC has provided. What these 2 fail to realize is that BREC Parks are for everyone's use, NOT just residents of the location subdivision. BREC's job is to enhance parks, each with different features, and within a budget. They have done that!

These people in no way represent the majority of residents in this subdivison. If chanel 33 wants to show a fair & impartial view of how people feel about the park they need to interview other people who don't have a agenda.

With better management this park could be the gem of the neighborhood. Keep the playground! Re-open the pool! Do a better job with what is already there.

I live in the neighborhood. This is OUTRAGEOUS!! Where is my property tax money going? We have done swimming lessons in this pool until it was closed last summer. Yet you are building new pools in other parks. Other areas are getting new parks entirely. Where is the money from the last 25 years or so? The entire property was donated and no real repairs have been done in recent memory. This park serves well over 1000 households. Come on BREC!!!! Sincerely,
A working class family with 3 kids.
