Oklahoma City, OK (KFOR) — An Oklahoma City mother is furious at what she says happened to her child at daycare.
She says her daughter contracted a form of herpes from her daycare teacher.
"I was hurt. I felt said as a parent and felt like I let her down."
Consuela Smith says her daughter is in pain night and day.
She claims her one-year-old got a horrible case of herpes from a daycare teacher at Childtime near SW 89th and May.
"She started getting blisters all around her mouth, they started bleeding."
Consulea says she immediately took her to the doctor.
"They told me that she had herpes."
Then Consuela says she contacted the daycare.
"I told her what she had and they told me the worker does have this."
And medical professionals we talked to said it's most likely a form of herpes.
"Herpetic stomatitis is basically when you have multiple cold sores in your mouth. Cold sores are normally caused by herpes simplex one virus," said Dr. Ryan Brown, of OU Children’s Hospital.
And it spreads in a heartbeat.
“They are very easily spread, by touching and rubbing something else or saliva."
We contacted Childtime in question but learned little.
"Believes her child contracted herpes simplex one, the oral type, from your daycare. Do you guys have any comment on that?"
"I am sorry, I cannot comment. That question needs to be directed to our media specialist."
Childtime corporate offices out of Michigan issued this statement in part:
"Our children's well-being is of the utmost importance to us. We have strict policies and procedures to ensure we meet or exceed regulatory guidelines on health and safety. We take every precaution to prevent the spread of germs or illness, and investigate any reported concerns."
For Smith, it's now about getting her daughter better and keeping others safe.
"It's nasty. A one year old walking around with herpes," said Consuela.
