New Orleans Police Department officials said they've arrested one of six people in connection with the shooting death of a popular Pat O'Brien's bartender.
NOPD's Homicide Division arrested 18-year-old Shawn Breaux in connection with the slaying of 21-year-old Earl Wheeler.
Police said Wheeler was shot and killed at the intersection of Dauphine and Canal streets on Nov. 26, just before 3:30 a.m.
"With the continued help from the citizens, one of the six offenders in this case has been taken off the streets of New Orleans," said Superintendent of Police Ronal Serpas. "I urge citizens to continue to take a stance against violence in our city by assisting the NOPD with bringing the five remaining suspects to justice."
Throughout the course of the investigation, NOPD said, detectives determined that Wheeler had gotten into a fight with a group of men just before his death.
Homicide Detective Melanie Dillon located several local businesses with surveillance cameras that captured the six suspects before and after the shooting, NOPD officials said.
Dillon positively identified Breaux, Russell Lopez, Michael Hales, Jarod Cooley, Glenn Tate and Cursheika Hartford as the men in the surveillance footage. Arrest warrants have been secured for the six on charges of second-degree murder.
NOPD said Breaux surrendered himself to the Violent Offender Warrant Squad at Central Lock-up on Thursday. He was arrested and booked on one count of second-degree murder.
